As in the previous year’s we’ve done this drive from Corning to Bakersfield this was our longest day on the road so far. We left the Rolling Hills Casino at 7:20am and arrived at the Orange Grove just after 3pm. We didn’t push it though and made sure we stopped at a few of the rest stops along the way.

It’s a fairly easy drive because there are no mountains to navigate. In fact, I put the truck on cruise control at just under 60mph and rarely had to ever take it off. That included going right through Sacramento and Stockton as New Year’s Day traffic was light.
I-5 traffic was heavy from Stockton all the way down
Once we left Stockton I was surprised at the number of vehicles on I-5 heading south. The photo directly above shows pretty much what it was like all the way from Stockton to Lost Hills where we swung onto Hwy. 46. It was almost like driving through a major city as cars, trucks and RV’s were whizzing by us every few seconds.
Going for a walk at one of the I-5 rest stops
It was no problem driving though as I just stayed in my lane on ‘cruise’ and let the maniacs fly by. The skies were blue and the sun was shining for the entire trip so that was nice.
Once we checked-in and got parked and setup at our site at the Orange Grove, Paulette was off with her bag to fill-er-up with oranges. The staff here encourage visitors to pick the oranges from the trees as they’ll only go bad if you don’t. These oranges are terrific and have to be the juiciest ones I’ve ever tasted.
It didn’t take long for Paulette to get a bag going
We took Molly and Rylie for a long walk around the entire RV Park before dinner. They needed some exercise and so did we after being cooped up in the truck all day. There must be a few hundred orange trees right within this park including at least two in every site.
Wednesday morning as we make the last leg of our trip to Desert Hot Springs we’ll be heading up and over the Tehachapi Pass. Thankfully, I won’t have to worry about turning a corner and driving headlong over the dreaded Fiscal Cliff as the U.S. Congress voted late New Year’s Day to agree on a solution.
We expect to arrive at the Sands RV Resort early on Wednesday afternoon. So far, it’s been a perfect trip down so we’re counting on that continuing until we get to our home-away-from-home. I’ll be glad to get our 5’er backed in and all setup for another 3 month stay.
Have a great Wednesday, and thanks again for visiting!
