A Very Busy Goldstream Salmon Spawning Run

Paulette and I drove down to Victoria late yesterday morning as I was meeting up with my friend Jim for lunch while Paulette was going to pick up a few items from a nearby quilt store.  It turned out to be quite a pleasant day for a change and we even enjoyed a little afternoon sunshine.

My friend Jim who I worked with for years is retiring this coming January so he was full of questions for me about what life’s like with no job to go to each morning.  I suggested he read a few RV’ing blogs to find out for himself.  The problem is, if Jim and too many others find out how good us retired RV’ers have it, they just might join us and fill up our parks and favourite winter desert retreats.

After lunch at our usual spot, Ferris’, I met up with Paulette for our drive home over the Malahat.  As we drove through Goldstream Park we figured we may as well stop and have a look to see if there were any salmon in the river.  It’s a good thing we did as the river was just loaded with returning salmon.  It’s been a few years since we’ve seen this many fish – they were everywhere and lots of them.

We spent about 45 minutes walking along the banks of the river and watching the salmon as some fought their way upstream through the strong current while others seemed to have found the gravel spots where they wanted to spawn.  Then, we remembered Molly and Rylie were home and waiting for us to take them for their afternoon hike so we hustled back to the car.

It was still nice and pleasant with the sun shining and a temperature of about 60F so after collecting Molly and Rylie we set off for an hour’s hike up to the water tower on Cobble Hill Mountain.  It sure didn’t feel like a November day that’s for sure.

That was about the extent of our day.  For dinner we had the leftover Chicken Lasagne from our lunch with Kim and Don on Wednesday.  It was every bit as good as it was the first time.  Last night, Paulette worked in her sewing room while listening to an audiobook and I just watched an NFL football game.

Have a great Friday, and thanks again for visiting!
