A Rest Day And Big Changes Coming For Apple iOS 7

After a full morning of helping Carrie to move to a new apartment in her condo building on Tuesday, Paulette and I took a bit of a rest yesterday.  Carrie had hired 2 husky guys to move all the heavy furniture yesterday and she said they finished the entire job in just 1 hour!  Total cost – $85!!  Can’t beat that with a stick!

Paulette and I are going to Carrie’s Thursday morning to help her unpack boxes and put stuff away.  She also has a bunch of pictures she wants me to hang so I’d better remember to bring a hammer and some hangers – maybe a little ‘wall filler’ too in case I get a bit carried away and punch a few holes in the wall.  I’m hoping once we’re finished this job that will be the end of the move for now.

Old machinery – none of which I know anything aboutIMG_4193

Yesterday morning, I took a drive in our little Mazda M3 loaner to browse around Canadian Tire looking for any bargains I might find.  There were lots of good sales on, as usual, but I didn’t find anything I couldn’t live without.  Paulette did some more gardening outside so now our utility trailer is overflowing which means when I get my truck back one of my first jobs is going to be a trip to the local recycling center to dump everything.

It was a nice, sunny day on Wednesday but still a bit cool.  It’s supposed to get quite a bit warmer in the next few days so I’m hoping that’s right.  We wanted to stay in the sunshine for our afternoon walk yesterday so we went back to the Cowichan River Estuary as there are no trees around to block the sun out.

Just adjacent to the Estuary is the Cowichan Bay Sawmill.  It was sold to new owners about 10 years ago and they did a complete overhaul of the old mill.  Just for the fun of it, we took a path that followed along the back of the mill that gave us a pretty good view of the property.  It looked to me like when they re-modeled the sawmill a lot of the old machinery was just dumped out back.

Most of the equipment seemed to be rusting away and it was most likely obsolete anyway.  There were boilers, belts, huge gears, old engines, tanks and all kinds of stuff – none of which I knew anything about.  There does seem to be a good market for scrap metal right now so I don’t know what the purpose is of hanging on to all this old junk equipment is.  It was still kind of interesting seeing it all.

jony ive

It’s been six months since Tim Cook reshuffled Apple’s leadership team, firing iOS architect Scott Forstall over his abrasive management style and unwillingness to collaborate with other members of the executive team, namely Apple’s industrial design guru, the 46-year-old Jonathan Ive (pictured left).

As a result of the shake-up, Ive has assumed responsibilities that now encompass all of Apple’s design, both the look and feel of its hardware and software.  Steve Jobs told his biographer Walter Isaacson that Ive was his “spiritual partner” at Apple to whom he gave more operational power than anybody at the company.

Apple-iOS-7

Under Ive’s direction Apple’s engineers are racing to finish iOS 7 in time for a June preview at Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference.  By all accounts this new operating system for iPhones and iPads is going to be a “massive design overhaul”.  Many sources claim this look will be attractive to new iOS users, but potentially unsettling for those who are long accustomed to the old look.

Have a great Thursday, and thanks again for visiting!
