Helping Carrie Move & An Obamacare Question

Ugh – I hate moving!  Even though we only had to move Carrie’s stuff out of her apartment, down the hall, up 3 floors in an elevator and then down the hall again to her new apartment, it’s still an awful lot of work.  We were lucky this time too as we didn’t have to move the heavy stuff like beds, sofas, dressers or any appliances.  Also, our granddaughter Jessica is back in town so we picked her up to help us.

In addition to what’s piled up here, boxes were in other rooms tooIMG_4226

We arrived at Carrie’s just before 10am and got to work quickly loading boxes onto the dollies I had brought over.  We quickly came up with a system to prevent us from banging into one another as we moved in and out of the apartments and elevator.  We finished up about 2 1/2 hours later.  The rest of the heavy stuff is going to be handled by movers Carrie hired for Wednesday.  Yahoo to that!!

Carrie’s new condo is pretty much the same size and 2BR layout as her previous unit.  The one big difference is her new one is much, much brighter and has a terrific view out the front room windows.  From the living room, she can look out across the city all the way to out Mount Douglas – a city landmark.  After taking a bit of a rest I took Carrie, Jess and Paulette out for lunch to a nearby White Spot.

It’s a very nice neighbourhood as well with lots of parks and schools nearby.  Carrie has a car so she can drive a few blocks to a nearby Safeway for groceries.  Now that May is here, her mid-June due date is fast approaching.  No name for the ‘little man’ yet but I have a feeling Carrie may have already decided but is keeping it a secret.

One of the topics that still comes up often in RV blogs written by our American friends is the subject of healthcare and especially the high cost or lack of coverage.  That’s why I was I was surprised, but not shocked, to see on the news last night that a new poll by the Kaiser Family Foundation shows a whopping 42% of Americans do not know that Obamacare is, in fact, the law of the land.  That’s amazing!

Included in that 42 percent -- 12 percent believe it has been repealed by Congress, 7 percent think the U.S. Supreme Court overturned it, and 23 percent are unsure of its status.  For the record, no portion of the law has been repealed; and the Supreme Court upheld it last summer as constitutional.  What is true is that for all Americans who currently have health insurance then the part of Obamacare that affects them is pretty much already in place.  It’s in effect now.

The only impact on the 85% of people who already have insurance is that their insurance is stronger because of rules against dropping folks with pre-existing conditions, coverage for children to age 26 and other improvements.  The implementation issues come up for those 10% to 15% who don’t have health insurance.  They will have to begin enrollment Oct. 1, 2013 for coverage on Jan. 1, 2014.

As an interested outside observer, what am I missing here?  It all seems pretty straightforward especially the huge Supreme Court ruling last summer in favour of Obamacare.  How is it possible that 42% of Americans still do not know that Obamacare is the official law of the land?  Maybe some of you RVers can help explain this because it sure puzzles me as most Canadians I talk to seem to understand it.

Have a great Wednesday, and thanks again for visiting!
