A Little More Than A Shaker Of Salt With Breakfast

Yesterday morning, we were just about to walk into Pinocchio’s with our friends Mel and Deb when a 4.7 magnitude earthquake rumbled across the desert from Anza all the way to San Diego.  Given the name of our breakfast restaurant, Pinocchio’s, I thought about making up a very dramatic tale of customers diving under tables, overturned chairs and spilled drinks but that would have been a fib and I would have walked out with a long nose.

Here’s why – we never felt a thing.  Not even a tremor.  We were in the restaurant for 90 minutes enjoying great breakfasts and during that whole time no one even mentioned any earthquake.  I wouldn’t have cared even if it was an 8.2 quake as my Mexican Omelette was so good my only worry would have been saving it before it crashed to the floor splattering sour cream, salsa and guacamole everywhere.  That would have been a real disaster!!

Mel, Debbie, Paulette and Moi – no worries about quakes here!IMG_1164

It wasn’t until we got back to the Sands and our friend Judy popped over to ask us if we’d felt the quake.  What earthquake?  Judy said she had been in a supermarket and it really scared her as the tins and bottles on the store shelves began to sway and rattle.  Other neighbours here at the Sands confirmed the quake was felt here as a sharp jolt followed by about 5 seconds of tremors.  We missed it all.

It sounds like the folks over in nearby Indian Wells got the biggest scare and that included many who were attending the BNP Paribas Open Golf Tournament at the big outdoor stadium there.  As far as I’m concerned that would add some much needed excitement to watching tennis.  It’s right up there with curling in my books – sorry for that, my fellow Canadians.

Happy Hour starts at 7:30am and ends at 2:30pm – Wowza!bar

Pinocchio’s is an interesting restaurant for downtown Palm Springs as it is only open from 7:30am to 3:00pm but the fully stocked bar is open right from the time the doors swing open at 7:30!  While we were having coffee, we noticed waiters walking by with chilled buckets of Champagne which is sold for $3.95 a glass – all you can drink.  This is a fun place alright and one of the reasons why it always seems to be packed with customers!

A holiday and restaurant reviewer described this place far better than I ever could:

You see, Pinocchio's is one of the institutions where leathery suntanned locals and the newly arrived pasty fleshed mesh and bond over a nonstop parade of waitresses bringing out new bottles.

By the time you've finished your meal and a bottle or three of champers (still for $3.95 per person), you've hit the proper Palm Springs relaxation level.  I have to say though that Mel, Deb, Paulette and I were very relaxed after even with coffee.  Pinocchio’s is located right downtown at 134 E. Tahquitz Canyon Way.

Have a great Tuesday, and thanks again for visiting!
