Google Reader Is Dead - ‘Feedly’ Is Better Anyway

Google is cleaning house again and getting rid of products that are either out-dated, duplicates or they were not profitable.  One of those products is Really Simple Syndication (RSS) Google Reader.  Basically, Google Reader has been Twitterized!  Twitter and other instantaneous news aggregators have outperformed RSS and Google is just cutting their losses.  Hanging on to old stuff is for losers!

Step 1:  Click Here to go to the Feedly setup sitereader

The outrage and opposition to Google’s decision to kill Reader was surprising to me as I’ve seldom ever used it.  Users, however, took to Twitter oddly enough to denounce Google.  Also, I started to get a few emails from bloggers who were wondering about a possible replacement since they were avid users of Google Reader.  Who knew?

Step 2:  Follow the links to “Add” Feedly Extensions to Chromereader2

Fortunately, there are a number of really good RSS programs that are much better than the not-so-well designed Google Reader.  I looked at a few of these and the one I liked the best was called Feedly.  This app runs as an extension on Chrome, Firefox and Safari.  Getting started is simple, as Feedly automatically transfers all of your subscriptions to its own RSS feed.

Step 3:  Click Login and signon with your Google ID and passwordreader3

I thought I’d give it a try yesterday and in just a few minutes I had Feedly installed along with all of my Google Reader subscriptions.  I can access Feedly simply by clicking its icon on my main Chrome Toolbar – it’s simple.  Feedly can be setup to look almost like Google Reader but with a few simple tweeks it looks and acts much better.

Step 4:  Click Allow Access so Feedly can access Google datareader4

When Google Reader does shut down on July 1st, Feedly will seamlessly transition all of your data over to its site.  In the meantime, Feedly is synchronized with Google Reader so you can use it now in place of Reader and not miss a beat.

Step 5:  That’s it – you are now on Feedly – same as Readerreader5

In non-techie news, it’s 8pm here in Desert Hot Springs as I’m writing this blog.  The temperature is still 95F!!  That’s hot for anytime of day let alone 8pm!  We hit the 100F mark here today so there wasn’t a whole lot of activity going on anywhere other than the swimming pool or anyplace that had good A/C.

About 1pm yesterday, I figured our truck with the A/C on full-blast would probably be as cool as anywhere so we all piled into the truck and went for a drive.  We headed down Gene Autry Dr. until we got to Hwy. 111 and then headed east out toward Indio.  It wasn’t long before we saw a sign announcing Shield’s Date Gardens.  Paulette and I both like Date Shakes so we thought a nice, cold shake would be a good way to cool off for a bit.

Luckily, we got our Date Shakes before the big bus pulled inIMG_1186

Just as I was parking the truck a big tour bus pulled up in front of the Shields front door.  Paulette jumped out and raced for the door just beating the first of about 40 elderly folks all intent on ordering their very first date shake.  Wow!  That was close but Paulette saved the day and we found a shady spot outside to sit and enjoy our shakes.

After leaving Shields, we slowly drove back to the Sands.  We had left our A/C on in the 5’er but it was still pretty warm inside but way better than the 100F outside.  Still, the coolest place to be was in the swimming pool so that’s where we headed after getting Molly and Rylie settled in a cool spot under the A/C fan.  The rest of our day and evening was spent not moving too much and trying to stay cool.

Have a great Friday, and thanks again for visiting!
