The Beach, Solvang, Pea Soup And More Beach

We awoke this morning to the pitter-patter sounds of raindrops falling on the roof of our 5’er.  It was quite nice as it had been over 3 months since we’ve heard any sounds of rain.  Even better, by the time we opened our door to take Molly and Rylie out around 8am, the rain had stopped completely, the skies had cleared and it was a beautiful, sunny morning on the California coast.

There’s no better way to work up an appetite for breakfast than by taking a long walk on a beautiful beach.  Paulette, me and the muttzo’s have really enjoyed our morning walks the last 2 days and are looking forward to 1 more before heading north a few hours to another spectacular beach at Marina Dunes in Monterey.

We skipped the little restaurant, located in our park, for breakfast as we were planning to visit the Danish town of Solvang about an hour south of us.  Solvang is famous for its Danish pastries and we knew we wouldn’t be able to resist once we saw all those bakery windows beckoning us.  But, the beach walk had made us hungry!

We left Pismo Beach before 10am and headed down Hwy. 101 to Solvang.  The weather was perfect with the temperature in the low 70’s and beautiful blue skies.

The bakeries with Danish Pastries are impossible to resist2013-04-04

We arrived in Solvang to find it just loaded with tourists like ourselves, what a little goldmine this place is.  After driving around for a few blocks, I eventually found a parking spot.  Wouldn’t you know it?  Right in front of a Danish Bakery!  It must have been fate.  The biggest problem was trying to decide what to choose from the hundreds of different looking pastries – but, we managed.

It’s very easy to walk around the entire town of Solvang in about an hour.  I had the feeling we had been dropped in the middle of Disneyland and into one of its fantasy worlds.  Solvang is as clean as a whistle, the shops and stores all feature unique looking buildings which I gather represents towns in Denmark.  Never having been to Denmark, I can’t confirm this, but it sure looks good in California.

Paulette browsed around in a few of the shops but the only thing we left town with was a bag of Danish pastries.  She said is was pretty expensive.  We did stop in a park and sit on a bench to sample a Blueberry Danish and we can both confirm it was worth the drive.

Andersen’s Pea Soup was every bit as good as advertised2013-04-041

Leaving Solvang we drove right across Hwy. 101 to Buellton the home of the famous Andersen’s Pea Soup.  Paulette went in and ordered a takeout carton of their Pea Soup which we planned to have for dinner.  She had also bought a freshly baked loaf of Sourdough bread at Olsen’s Bakery in Solvang to go with dinner!

It was 2:30 by the time we rolled back into the Pismo Beach RV Resort.  We were both dead tired by this time so we just found comfy chairs and settled in for a short siesta.  Molly and Rylie must have thought that was a great idea too as they jumped right up on top of me on my Lazy Boy and settled right in.

We walked for miles on this beach last nightIMG_1979

We must have been tired because we dozed off until about 4pm.  I had to get out of my chair right away because if I didn’t I thought I might actually be there for the night!!  Instead of going for our usual afternoon walk on the beach we decided to wait until after dinner.  The Pea Soup from Andersen’s was delicious and every bit as good as all those billboards along the highway say it is.  So was the bread.

Goodbye to Pismo Beach for another year!IMG_1973

We must have walked for miles along Pismo Beach last night as we made it all the way to long pier out over the water in the village.  By the time we made it back, we were all dead tired from trudging through the sand.  Paulette and I figured we must have burned off a few calories so we bought a dish of soft ice cream at the store here and took it back to have with our Apple Strudel from Solvang!

Finally, on a sad note, Paulette and I drove over to Price St. here in Pismo Beach to visit the site where our dear friends Margie and Bruce were struck down and killed by a criminally negligent driver back in October, 2010 – so horribly senseless.

We have visited this site before to pay our respects to Margie and Bruce and in our previous visits there was a flower memorial with an absolutely stunning view of the Pacific Ocean.  Unfortunately, the memorial seems to have been removed.  The view is still spectacular so Paulette and I spent a few moments their gazing out over the Pacific and remembering our friends.

Have a great Friday, and thanks again for visiting!
