A Morning Walk In The Somenos Marsh Wetlands

While driving our truck home the other day I noticed the fuel tank was edging down towards 1/4 of a tank of fuel.  Tuesday morning Paulette was off to Cloth Castle in Victoria for a Quilting Club get together so I thought it would be a good time to head into Safeway and get a fill-up of diesel.  We get a 5 cent a litre (20 cents/gallon) discount at Safeway so I always try and fill up there.

It was just before noon and the skies had cleared up a bit so I decided to take Molly and Rylie to the nearby Somenos Marsh Wetlands Park for a walk just in case Paulette was late in getting home.  Normally, when we’ve gone to the Somenos Marsh it’s been during the summer or early fall when the marsh has been pretty dry.  I figured this time it would be flooded with water and I was right!

Luckily, there is a fenced elevated boardwalk that winds its way right through a good portion of the wetlands so there’s no worries about getting wet feet – or disturbing any of the birds and wildlife either.  This wetlands park is due to the efforts of the Somenos Marsh Wildlife Society.  This group of volunteers has worked tirelessly for over 25 years to preserve the continued existence and functioning of its wetland ecosystems.

There are over 200 different types of birds sighted at Somenos Marsh but most of them were in hiding yesterday as all I saw were a few ducks.  Some of the birds spotted by others include Trumpeter Swans, Canada Geese, Marsh Hawks, Mallard Ducks and Blue Herons. Other wildlife in the area include muskrat, beaver, river otters and raccoons.

We spent about an hour walking the entire boardwalk trail while stopping to look and take pictures here and there.  By the time we were ready to head home, clouds were moving in and it looked like rain was on the way again.  I don’t mind the rain all that much but I’m still looking forward to the sunshine of Desert Hot Springs next month.  It’s going to be a welcome change in climate for a while.

When Paulette arrived home, the rain had stopped and she was all gung-ho for some exercise so we headed over to Cobble Hill Mountain to walk up to the Water Tower.  Molly and Rylie love it when they get 2 outings in one day.  Me?  Not so much!  I’m good with one hike a day keeping the doctor away!

Have a great Wednesday, and thanks again for visiting!
