A Pre-Christmas Family Dinner In Victoria

It’s our granddaughter Mikayla’s turn to spend Christmas with her other grandparents this year up in Qualicum Beach.  She’s leaving this Sunday, so we made arrangements for all of our family living here on Vancouver Island to get together last night for dinner in Victoria at the pub/restaurant where our son Kevin is a manager.

We met at the restaurant at 5pm and things were really hopping for so early in the evening.  Kevin said they had 2 large groups of over 25 coming in for dinner – including one group coming in to hold a wake of all things.  We promised to not get too rowdy so as to upset the mourners.  With that he was off and working but managed to pop over and check-in with us on a regular basis.

My hamburger was the hottest, spiciest burger I’ve ever tasted!!IMG_0229

Looking at the menu before dinner, I thought the J.J. House Burger sounded pretty good.  It was described as being a hot, Mexican type burger yada, yada, yada.  I’ve had these kinds of burgers before and usually it’s just a few jalapenos peppers and maybe some hot salsa sauce so if its too hot you can just scrape a few peppers off.  Kevin warned me that this one has Jalapenos and other hot spices mixed right into the burger.  No problem, I said – I love hot food!!

Was I ever wrong!  My burger was like biting into a piece of red hot coal only it tasted better.  Man, was this thing hot and it just kept getting hotter – almost like eating a spoonful of Green Wasabi.  Still, it was a darned good hamburger and I did manage to eat it all even though I drank about 3 large glasses of water with it.  Later, Kevin told me the JJ stands for Jalapeno, Jalapeno.  DUH!!

Nothing like a little makeup to put a smile on a young girl’s faceIMG_0228

Since Mikayla won’t be able to come to our house on Christmas Day we brought her gifts down with us.  Kevin got us a nice quiet booth with lots of room to spread out.  After dinner, Paulette and Carrie took turns being Santa Claus to pass Mikayla her gifts to open.  This was a lot of fun as usual.

A Board Game??  Paulette explains Mexican Train DominosIMG_0217

The biggest laugh of the night was when Mikayla opened a gift from us called Mexican Train Dominoes.  She looked a little mystified as to what it was being an iPhone, Facebook, Twitter kind of teenager.  Paulette explained Mexican Train is really popular at our RV Park in Palm Springs and told her there’s an actual Mexican Train Game Night.  We had to admit though that we seldom ever saw anyone under the age of 60 playing this game.

Now, this is more like it – an iPhone dock/clock stereo with remoteIMG_0235

Soon the shock of playing a regular game of cards and domino’s was forgotten as Mikayla opened her final gift – a Sony IPhone Docking Station/Stereo Clock Radio with remote.  This got an immediate two thumbs up no doubt about it!!  There were no questions about this gift as Mikayla knew exactly what it was and figured that now her iPhone should never have a dead battery again!  You have an iPhone?

Along with games and gizmos there was also jewelry and clothesIMG_0232

We were going to pass on dessert until Kevin mentioned their special Baked Smores with ice cream.  That lit Mikayla’s eyes up for sure so we ordered one of these with a few extra forks.

It’s a good thing too because even Mikayla could not finish this decadent dessert all on her own.  Us adults had a taste and it was every bit as good as it looked.  It’s a good thing we all didn’t order one of these because I’m sure we’d have kept eating until it was all gone as it was that good.

There was one surprise left in IMG_0240our evening as when our bill came I saw that it was over 50% ‘promo’!!

I asked our waitress what’s with that and she said “that was your son, Kevin, he’s a real good guy”.  I guess he is – this has sure been a good week for Paulette and I to be parents of great kids!!

Have a great Friday, and thanks again for visiting!
