We started off our day with the bi-weekly Pancake Breakfast here at the Sands. It was great as usual – how can you beat eggs, sausages and all you can eat pancakes for $4?
Paulette and I were the first ones in the hall at 7:30am Saturday. We were heading out for our usual garage sale foray and Paulette always likes to get an early start – something about the “early bird gets the worm”!
Personally, I think the early bird just gets to see the really good junk while later visitors are stuck with the really bad junk.
Sometimes I run across neat things while going to garage sales
Even though I don’t browse many of the garage sales, I always seem to find lots of things to keep me interested. One of them was this old Ford pictured above. I’m not much on old automobiles so I have no idea what year or model this machine is, all I know is it’s old. It probably would have sold for a few bucks at a garage sale too!
Street Fair #1: Paintings, Art and not too many visitors
Paulette did manage to make a few small item purchases and then we decided to head into downtown Palm Springs to checkout two Street Fairs located only a block apart. The first was the Art Festival which seems to be in the same location each Saturday morning even though I couldn’t find anything official about it. This event was mostly paintings, sculptures, pottery, jewellery and other high-end craft things. Lots of stuff for sale but people were very scarce.
Street Fair #2: All the usual gadgets and jammed with people
The second street fair only began in the fall of 2012 and it’s located in the north parking lot of the Spa Resort Casino. The idea for this one came from vendors watching visitors stream into Palm Springs for the weekend who had missed the Thursday night Village Fest along Palm Springs Canyon and didn't want to make the drive Saturday to Palm Desert for the College of the Desert Street Fair.
After spending an hour at this new Street Fair I agree it’s a much easier event than fighting the huge crowds at the College of the Desert. It’s also a lot closer for us too and it has pretty much the same types of vendors as the COD just no so many booths all selling the same thing – i.e. t-shirts, sunglasses, kitchen gadgets etc.
The busiest booth seemed to be the one selling hats! Hats of all types for men and women – hundreds of them. Everyone seemed to be trying on all the different styles, shapes and colors. Paulette likes hats that help shield her face from the sun so she managed to pick one up that she liked. Me? I’ve got a perfectly good hat at home – which I seldom ever wear, so why buy a new one?
Most optimistic vendor? Guy selling home in Maine for $990,000
The prize for the “most optimistic vendor” had to go to the guy selling a waterfront home in Maine for only $990,000! This was for real. I talked to him and he said he couldn’t think of a better place to try and sell his Maine property than in Palm Springs. Some rich guy might just love getting out of the 100+ degree heat of the desert for the nice cool breezes of Maine. I thought about offering him $900,000 but it’s such a long drive from Vancouver Island.
The dog in the middle was a spitting image of Molly – Rylie agreed!
Even though it was only 11am when we were at the Street Fair, the temperature was already in the high 70s. We eventually made it back to the Sands before noon and never left the park for the rest of the day. Judy, a fellow quilter, came over to visit Paulette and I rode up to the pool for my usual afternoon routine of a swim and a long soak in the hot tub.
Chef Joe prepared a wonderful Lasagne dinner with salad for Paulette and I last night. What would we do without him? Later, we watched a movie on Netflix.
Have a great Sunday, and thanks again for visiting!
