High Winds, No Rain And Hotmail Is Finally Dead!

The weather forecast for Tuesday called for high winds and a 90% chance of rain.  They got it half-right as the desert winds sure blew through here but they were 100% wrong on the rain part as we never saw a drop.  The mountain range rain shield worked again.  Still, it wasn’t a day to be sitting outside or going for a swim.  Sounds like we’ve got one more day of winds to endure as well.

Making the best of it, I talked to my friend Mel this morning at the dog park and we arranged to meet for breakfast in Cathedral City.  He had to drop his car off there for servicing so I said I’d meet him at a place called Don and Sweet Sue’s.  Mel recommended it and it was excellent.  We both had omelettes, hashbrowns, toast and coffee.  Sure beat my normal Raisin Bran breakfast.

Hotmail is Dead – Long live Outlook.com!cambiar-hotmail-a-outlook

Goodbye Hotmail and hello Outlook.com.  Microsoft has announced that Outlook.com will fully replace Hotmail as their webmail service. The company will begin to auto-update accounts, and hopes they will be fully migrated from Hotmail to Outlook.com by this summer.  I think that’s a good move as Hotmail is so far behind the times it would be practically impossible to re-engineer it – it’s horrible!

Anyone going to miss this?Hotmail_old_screenshot

While dancing on Hotmail’s grave, I have to say that Hotmail is harder to kill than Dracula.  Even though Microsoft is auto-moving everyone on Hotmail to Outlook.com, if you happen to have an existing @hotmail.com address you will be able to use it forever!  For Hotmail users, you will begin to get alerts and notifications that will inform you about the move to Outlook.

If you want to convert to Outlook now before Microsoft does it for you it’s pretty easy.  Just log into Hotmail then click Settings at the top right — you will see the option to convert to Outlook.  From then on when you will be directed to Outlook.com whether you try to sign in to Hotmail or not.

Although my main email provider is Gmail – I do have Outlook.comoutlook

I converted my Hotmail account to Outlook.com some time ago and took advantage of a neat feature that ensures no one even knows I still have an actual @hotmail.com address(to avoid embarrassment).  In Outlook, you can set up to 4 “aliases” that are connected to your Hotmail address.  So, here’s an example of how that works:

Original Hotmail Address

New Outlook Alias

By creating the new outlook alias above, all mail sent to either email address will arrive in the @outlook.com inbox.  All new messages sent out will have the address of @outlook.com.  Eventually, all of your friends, relatives etc. will migrate to  your new outlook.com address and your Hotmail address will only be a formality.  You can, however, continue to use your existing Hotmail address if you wish.

According to Microsoft, over 60 million users have signed up for Outlook in the past 6 months.  That’s why they are pushing up the date for the planned conversion.  Microsoft thinks they finally have a chance to challenge Google’s Gmail webmail service which pretty much obliterated Hotmail.  We’ll see, I’m not yet convinced of that simply because of the goofy Hotmail name still hanging around.

Google Gmail is still the email king!Gmail-Google-Mails-web-ba-001

Gmail serves over 420 million users and Yahoo over 230 million. Once Microsoft shifts all the users from Hotmail to Outlook, It will probably be larger than Yahoo but not as big as Gmail.  This new move for Microsoft is a good market strategy as users are bound to get attracted to Outlook because of the nice, clean interface.

Have a great Wednesday, and thanks again for visiting!
